Pirates enter playoffs as No. 20 seed

The Pagosa Springs High School Pirate soccer team traveled to the Front Range Wednesday, Oct. 30, for its first-round playoff matchup against the Aurora West College Prep Academy Spartans. 

Kickoff was set for 3:30 p.m. at the Aurora Public Schools Stadium in Aurora. Scores and stats were unavailable as of press time Wednesday. 

The Pirates entered the matchup as the 20th-ranked team in the state’s 3A division with an overall record of 9-2-3, including a league mark of 4-1-1, which won the Pirates the Intermountain League (IML) title.

The Spartans entered the matchup as the 13th-ranked team in the state’s 3A, with an identical overall record to that of the Pirates at 9-2-3. That includes a league mark of 6-0, which earned the Spartans the top spot in their respective league, the 3A/2A Foothills League.

The only other team from the IML to make the playoffs are the Bayfield Wolverines, who finished second in the league with an overall record of 8-6-1, including a league mark of 4-2. 

The Wolverines entered their first-round playoff match as the 24th ranked team in the state, taking on ninth-ranked Coal Ridge. 

The No. 1-ranked team in the 3A division is Holy Family Tigers out of Broomfield.

The top 32 teams in the state are placed into a single-elimination-style bracket with the higher-ranked team in each matchup hosting through the quarterfinal round.

Second-round matches are scheduled to take place Nov. 5, the quarterfinals are scheduled for Nov. 9, the semifinals are scheduled for Nov. 13 and the championship is scheduled for Nov. 16.

This year’s 3A state final match will take place at the Switchbacks Weidner Field in Colorado Springs at noon. The semifinals will take place at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
